Inauguration 2013 Journey : I decided to journey by Amtrak's Capitol Limited to Washington DC for the second inauguration of President Barack Obama. I decided to leave my big cameras at home and travel with only the tiny but amazing Sony RX100. I never missed having an SLR. I put a few of these on Alamy Live News, which explains their photojournalistic captions. If you have the time, Amtrak is great. The food is good, service is excellent and it's actually possible to sleep in the tiny roomettes. The train pulled out of Chicago on time and into DC a few minutes early. The return train left DC on time and arrived in Chicago almost 30 minutes early. The train speeds along from Chicago to Pittsburgh but then follows the river valleys through the mountains and seems to crawl along, but the views are worth it.

Starved Rock State Park : Photos from a much needed trip away from the hustle and bustle of Chicago. Luckily, this amazing place is less than two hours away. The advantage of going on a weekday is you don't have much company. The folks who were there were great, including a strength and conditioning class from a local school out on a team building hike. Unfortunately, I didn't get there as early as planned and eventually had mid-day light on a blue sky day. All photos taken with the new Canon 5D Mark III, which is now my main event, portrait and commercial camera body. Works nicely for pretty pictures too! It was a breezy day so I frequently had to bump up the ISO and shutter speed to cut down on tree blur.
